With new era on the horizon, men's basketball hosts its first Info Session in early September
Under the guidance of first-year head coach Mike Romano, the Knights are beginning to lay the foundation for the 2024–25 season, starting with open gym times in August followed by a September 5 Information Session.
Warwick, RI – The Community College of Rhode Island men’s basketball program is hosting its first Information Session of the offseason Thursday, September 5 from 4:30–5 pm at the Warwick Campus Field House.
Information Sessions are opportunities for prospective student-athletes to learn about the program, meet coaches, and get the required paperwork prior to attending tryouts. Student-athletes must complete medical paperwork and an academic eligibility before being allowed to try out. Those looking to get a head start on their requirements are strongly encouraged to email head coach Mike Romano at mromano6@ccri.edu prior to the Information Session. Students who do not attend the Information Session or contact coach Romano will not be allowed to try out; no walkups will be accepted on the first day of tryouts.
Beginning Tuesday, August 6, the program is also hosting open gym time for registered or prospective CCRI students on Tuesday and Thursdays from 4:30–6:30 pm in Warwick. Proper attire and conduct are required.
CCRI begins a new era in 2024–25 under Romano, who was named head coach – just the fifth in program history – in May. A Pawling, NY, native and Glocester, RI, resident, Romano has spent the past two and a half years at CCRI as the Athletics, Recreation and Wellness Departments Compliance Coordinator and brings a wealth of coaching experience to the men’s basketball program having coached at Rhode Island College, Bard College, Alfred University, and Hartwick College in addition to his role with various Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball tournaments and organizations.
The 2023–24 Knights finished 13-18 overall 11-11 in Region XXI play. They won eight of their final 11 league games during the regular season to earn the sixth seed in the Region XXI Tournament, where they lost to No. 3 Quinsigamond. The program’s rich tradition includes 20 regional titles, 10 northeast district titles, and 14 trips to the NJCAA National Tournament, including their most recent appearance in 2021–22.
